Rolling Lots That Drain Toward White Lick Creek

Established Mooresville neighborhoods, many built between the 1960s and the '90s, have mature trees and yards with real slope. Front lawns tilt toward the street, backyards drop toward ravines or creek bottoms, and water moves fast across clay topsoil during spring storms.

Mowing and feeding on a grade

On slopes we mow across the face where it's safe and trim steeper banks rather than forcing a mower over them. Core aeration on the upper grade helps rain soak in instead of sheeting off, and split fertilizer applications keep nutrients from washing to the bottom of the yard.

Creek bottoms versus the Camby side

Right along White Lick Creek, the soil changes. Bottomland lots sit on siltier, looser ground laid down by past floods; it drains quickly once high water leaves but can dry out hard in August. Those lawns need a higher cut and fall seeding more than aeration.

Head north on SR-67 toward Camby and the lots flatten out. Newer subdivisions there sit on graded fill, drain slowly and grow crabgrass along every thin seam, which calls for pre-emergent timing and fall aeration rather than slope work.

When White Lick Creek runs over its banks after a spring downpour, the lower yards on the creek side are left under a film of silt, sticks and trash.
