• Material brought to the beds

  We haul the hardwood in for the job, so you aren’t left with a loose pile staining the concrete and a weekend of wheelbarrow trips.

• Weeds pulled by the root

  Dandelions, clover, creeping Charlie and tree seedlings come out before anything is covered. Mulch hides weeds for a week; pulling them keeps them gone.

• A re-cut spade edge

  Every lawn border gets a vertical cut about 3 inches deep. On clay soil that edge holds its shape far longer than a shallow string-trimmer line.

• Old mulch dealt with first

  Where last year’s layer is still sound, we loosen and top it up. Where it has matted, mounded or piled against trunks, we rake it down or pull it out before new material goes in.

• Tree rings rebuilt flat

  Each tree gets a wide, level ring with the root flare left visible, never a cone of mulch pressed against the bark.

• Clearance at the house

  We keep mulch a few inches below siding, weep holes and the A/C pad, and leave downspout splash areas clear so water still drains away from the foundation.

How We Install Mulch the Right Way

Every job follows the same sequence so the finished bed looks good in October, not just the afternoon we leave.

   Walk the beds and measure

   We measure square footage and check existing depth with a trowel. If there’s already 2 inches of decent mulch, you need a light top-up, not a full load.

   Weed and clear debris

   Weeds come out by the root, and leaves, sticks and last year’s clumps get raked out so new mulch sits on soil, not trash.

   Cut a fresh spade edge

   We cut a vertical edge about 3 inches deep along lawn borders and throw the soil back into the bed. That trench keeps mulch in and grass out.

   Pull back old buildup

   Where mulch has mounded against trunks or siding, we rake it down first. Mulch should never touch house siding or cover tree root flares.

   Spread to a 2–3 inch depth

   Shredded hardwood goes down by hand and rake to an even 2–3 inches, tapering to almost nothing at the trunk of each tree and shrub.

   Clean up and final walk

   Walks, driveway and lawn get blown clean. If we missed a bit of edge or left mulch on the walk, tell us within 48 hours and we come back to fix it.

No two properties use the same amount of material or labor, so we quote each one individually. These are the factors that move the number.

Total bed square footage

Material is ordered by the cubic yard, so bed and tree-ring size is the biggest driver.

Depth needed

A 1-inch top-up over sound mulch uses a third of the material that a 3-inch install over bare soil does.

Edging condition

Re-cutting an existing edge is quick. Carving a new edge through overgrown turf takes noticeably more time.

Weeding and old-mulch removal

Beds full of established weeds or volcano mounds that must be raked down add labor before any new mulch goes in.

Access to the beds

Backyard beds behind a fence or up a slope mean more wheelbarrow trips than front beds next to the driveway.

Mulch type and color

Natural double-shredded hardwood and dyed black or brown mulch are priced differently by suppliers.
