Flat Ground, Tight Clay and Industrial Acreage

Howard County sits on a nearly level glacial till plain. The dark, heavy soils were tiled for farming long before the subdivisions arrived, and on a flat lot, rain has nowhere quick to go. Water sits in low corners, the clay seals over, and roots stay shallow.

Problems we see on Kokomo lots

Open ground and serious storms

With few hills or tree lines to break it, wind crosses Kokomo at full strength. The city has taken direct tornado hits, including the August 2016 tornadoes that damaged homes and businesses across the city. Even an ordinary summer squall drops limbs from the older trees along Wildcat Creek and scatters debris across wide lawns. Storm cleanup here is part of the season, not a rare event.

Highland Park, Old Silk Stocking and the Plant Corridors

In the Old Silk Stocking district, big older homes carry mature trees and deep beds. A typical call is a scheduled fall cleanup with leaf removal: leaves hauled, beds cut back and perennials trimmed, all in one visit timed for early to mid-November.

Closer to the industrial campuses, the common request is a seasonal contract for frontage and retention areas. We plan fixed service days, add spring and fall cleanups, and set up lawn fertilization applications timed to the weather so the turf stays thick enough to crowd out weeds.

South of downtown, the ranch homes of Indian Heights and the larger lots out toward Darrough Chapel are where neighbor groups make the most sense. Three or four owners on nearby streets booking the same fall aeration or weed control day turns a one-hour drive into a full, efficient trip, and each yard gets the same care it would on our home route.
