Prairie Soils, Steady Wind and Summer Drought

Clinton County lies on the flat Tipton Till Plain, and Frankfort's soils are dark, silty clay loams built by prairie grasses. They're fertile, but they crack in dry spells and seal over after heavy rain. Add steady wind across open ground and a lawn can lose moisture far faster than one tucked among trees.

The same soil is soggy in April

Those dark prairie soils swing the other way in spring. Much of the land around Frankfort was wet prairie drained with field tile, and subdivisions built on former cropland still hold water in the low corners after a March thaw. We keep heavy equipment off saturated ground and schedule spring aeration only once a screwdriver slides in without the hole filling with water.

Around TPA Park and the Courthouse Square

In the older blocks near TPA Park, a representative call comes in late August from an owner whose front lawn went dormant in July and only partly came back. We aerate, overseed with a drought-tolerant turf-type tall fescue blend, and give watering guidance for the first three weeks.

Newer homes on the edges of town face the fields with almost no shelter, and wind scatters light mulch out of the beds. A common fix there is a spring mulch installation using heavier shredded hardwood, with beds edged deeper to hold it in place.

Yards across from TPA Park take extra foot traffic every summer, with the Hot Dog Festival crowd and ballgame parking pressing the turf flat along the curb. That strip compacts first, so we core it harder in fall and seed it with a tougher tall fescue than the shaded backyard behind the same house.
